He attended St. Anthony Catholic school for primary education and attended St. Anthony Catholic High School for secondary education. He has a deep-rooted love and connection with the San Antonio community. He later attended Trinity University from 1999 to 2003, where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology. During his time at Trinity University, he was involved on campus as a reporter for the Trinitonian, a member of the Crusade for Peace and Justice, and a volunteer with the Trinity University Volunteer Action Committee. While pursuing his degree in anthropology, he conducted research abroad in Vietnam, which later served as an interest for his dissertation. After successfully graduating from Trinity University in 2002, he pursued a Ph.D from the University of California, Berkeley. During his time at UC Berkeley, he conducted research in Southeast Asia, specifically examining the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Vietnam. As a medical anthropologist, his work has contributed immensely to the field. After obtaining his Ph.D in anthropology, he returned to his alma mater, Trinity University, as an assistant professor. He later became an associate professor of anthropology and has been an essential part of the Sociology and Anthropology department and the Trinity University community as a whole. The interview takes place in San Antonio, Texas, on the Trinity University campus and is conducted in English. Dr. Montoya’s interview was conducted for the HIST3467 class at Trinity University. His interview will be a new addition to the TU Treasures Oral History Collection and Conmemorando a la Comunidad. Dr Montoya is a Trinity University Alum, Co 2000, and is now an Associate professor of Anthropology at Trinity University. In his interview, Dr. Montoya recounts life on the west side of San Antonio and his time at TU. He discusses the financial hardships he faced as a child and his experience as a member of the Latinx community. Memories of reporting for the Trinitonian, an anti-war protest, and life at TU resurface during this interview. Dr. Montoya also outlines his research at the University of California Berkeley, where he conducted ethnographic research in Vietnam.
