Born in 1948 and from Washington D.C, Dr. Sanders attended John Hopkins University for his undergraduate years and received his PhD from Harvard University. He went on to teach at the University of Illinois and then worked in D.C for the U.S. Department of Housing \u0026amp; Urban Development and later found himself in Texas. He was a professor at Trinity University from 1982-2000 and worked in the Urban Studies department. He went on to teach at the University of Texas at San Antonio from 2000-Spring 2024. Dr. Sanders has deep connection with both Trinity University and the city of San Antonio and through this connection has changed the lives of so many students over the years. (Biographical Note)","In this interview with Dr. Heywood \"Woody\" Sanders, the themes of higher education and the importance of Urban Studies as an academic discipline are discussed. By diving into his personal experiences, we as the listener are able to better understand his relationship with Trinity University, the city of San Antonio, and higher education as a whole. Starting his higher education teaching in Texas in 1982, and continuing this journey until the spring of 2024, Dr. Sanders has seen both the city of San Antonio change over time, but also has seen the similarities and differences between generations of Trinity Students. What Trinity University is and has been has shaped Dr. Sanders not only personally, but academically as well.  Dr. Sanders expresses the need for real world exposure within the classroom, especially at Trinity, and speaks about how systemic issues presented within the city play a role in higher education and how understanding these inequalities are vital in creating a city that serves the people that live there.
