Her father immigrated from Thailand as a teenager and settled into a vibrant Thai community. When Soontornvat was three years old, her parents moved to the small town of Weatherford, Texas to open the first Thai restaurant in the county. Soontornvat reflected that she spent much of her childhood reading while at her parents’ restaurant. After graduating from Weatherford High School, Soontornvat attended Trinity University from 1998-2002. During her time at TU, she went on a study abroad trip to Australia and was an avid member of the physics club. She met her husband at Trinity. After both graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering, they moved to Hawaii and then Austin. In Austin, Soontornvat volunteered at the Austin Children’s Museum during her engineering office job. She also received her Master of Science Education at University of Texas at Austin. Eventually, she moved to a full-time position at the museum for a decade before becoming a full-time author. As of 2024, Soontornvat lives in Tennessee with her husband and two daughters.
