Dr.Garza’s Father was enlisted in the military, so he grew up in various places, including Amarillo, the Rio Grande Valley, and France. Garza attended Thomas Jefferson high school on the Northwest side of San Antonio, a college preparatory school. In 1968, he enrolled at Trinity University, where he studied Biology and was a part of the Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC), which at the time was mandatory for all male students. Garza was also a member of the Pershing Rifles Honor Society and the Trinity Association of Chicano Students. Most significantly, Garza was elected as President of the Student Association, where assisted with the implementation of a consortium of colleges across San Antonio. After graduating from Trinity in 1971, Garza enrolled at Harvard Medical school, where he earned his medical degree and Masters in public health. Before retiring, Dr.Garza had his own solo private practice as a gastroenterologist for 35 years. At the same time, he also served in the US Army reserves, where he retired at the rank of Colonel. The interview begins with Dr.Garza’s early childhood and familial history. During the interview, Dr. Garza discusses his early education extensively, which was segregated in the Rio Grande Valley, his experience abroad as an adolescent, and his time at Thomas Jefferson High School. During his time at Trinity, Dr. Garza talks about his time in the Student Association, Trinity Association of Chicano Students, Reserve Officer Training Corps, and the Pershing Rifles Honor Society. Dr. Garza also mentions his thoughts on race, ethnicity, and the Chicano movement. On a similar note, he also brings up the role of the Vietnam war in his decision to apply for medical school.
